This year’s USTA Southwest 18 and Over Adult League Championships were played in Albuquerque, New Mexico August 10-12, 2018. Gender teams in a variety of NTRP skill divisions (2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0+) battled for a coveted Sectional championship title and the right to advance on to league National Championship events later in the fall.

The SaddleBrooke Tennis Club had a few of our members participate in this USTA Southwest 18 and Over League, playing out of the Oro Valley Community Center and Westward Look Tennis Club. The STC players were Chris Madsen, Sharon Gartner, Cindy Madsen and Sandy Stettler and SaddleBrooke resident Kitsie Johnson.

Congrats to our new women’s USTA Southwest 18 and Over League 3.5 women’s champions from Southern Arizona Tennis USTA – SAZ. The ladies squad aka “Fireballs” plays out of Oro Valley Community Center and was captained by Cindy Klingberg. This team consisted of SaddleBrooke STC members Sharon Gartner and Cindy Madsen and SaddleBrooke resident Kitsie Johnson. The team won 5-0 defeating every team they came across. The ladies will be representing the USTA Southwest at Nationals in Orlando, Florida in October 2018. Go Fireballs!

Chris Madsen, one of STC’s teaching pros, was a member of the Oro Valley Community Center 4.5 men’s team and was captained by Karthik Chandrasekaran. The 4.5 Men’s team also fought for a National spot going into day three with a 2-0 record. The team had to take three out of the five courts to head to Nationals but came out short losing three courts and ended up taking third place in their division.

STC member Sandy Stettler and SB resident Kitsie Johnson represented the 3.0 women’s team out of Westward Look who was also captained by Cindy Klingberg. This 3.0 team fought hard from the very first day of the tournament. They came across a very tough Central AZ team on day one and fell short taking only two courts. They finished strong on days two and three and ended up taking the finalist spot (second place). These ladies should be very proud of their accomplishment.

Over all the USTA Southwest 18 and Over Adult League Championships was a huge success. We wish the 3.5 women’s Southern Arizona “Fireballs” team the best of luck in their upcoming National Tournament in Orlando, FL.
