Spanish Culture Club news

Elaine Pfeffer

We were delighted to welcome a representative of the Mexican Consulate of Tucson as our guest speaker for our monthly meeting April 16. Sebastián Alfonso Galván-Duque Covarrubias spoke from his prepared remarks, “U.S.-Mexico Relations and the Role of the Consulate.” He presented information about the role of the consulate in representing Mexican citizens in the U.S. and southern Arizona and statistics of cross-border commerce, communication and cooperation, addressing questions and concerns of our members. We welcomed many residents from our SaddleBrooke community to share this unique event.

Members Kate Grinnell and Barbara Levinson hosted our Wine Social at the home of Kate and Brian for members and guests on April 20. The bountiful assortment of cheese, fruit and vegetables, provided by our club, and numerous Spanish wine varieties, provided by each member, were thoroughly enjoyed by all.

We will continue to meet for breakfast at the Roadrunner Grill on the fourth Monday of the month through the summer. The date for the next breakfast is May 28. Going forward, breakfasts will always be meeting at the Roadrunner Grill. Speaking Spanish is not required for this event.

To practice your language skills, visit the Spanish-only conversation group, meeting at noon at the Mesquite Grill on the first Monday of the month through the summer. Contact Mark Goodrich at [email protected], if you wish to attend.

Discussion is underway to create a summer event for our increasing number of fulltime residents. Additionally, the board is planning several exciting programs for the coming year, October 2018 through May 2019. Watch this space for specifics when announced.

As the current season winds down, we remind everyone that our next regular monthly meeting will be October 12, 2018. Please join us for Sharon Cotter offering us an armchair trip to Peru featuring her photos from her upcoming trip.

The Spanish Culture Club of SaddleBrooke (SCC) is a culture club, not a language club. It is composed of a group of socially and intellectually curious Brookers that seek to expand their knowledge of Latin culture within the “Old Pueblo” and beyond. We aspire to enriching our monthly meetings by including guest speakers and offering potluck tapas buffets.

October through April, we meet monthly at the SaddleBrooke One Activity Center at 5:30 p.m. on the third Monday of the month. Please bring a potluck dish to share and your beverage of choice. If you choose to become a member, the annual fee is $20 per person. You may send your check, made out to “Spanish Culture Club” to Riley Jackson, 65441 E. Rocky Mesa Dr., Tucson, AZ 85739. For more information, you may contact our membership chair, Susan Durchslag at  [email protected].
