Ten volunteers worked tirelessly at the annual Recreation Activities Fair while manning the SaddleBrooke Pickleball Association (SPA) table. An informative video, personal explanations and an opportunity for those interested to sign up for a two hour Introductory Lesson proved to be beneficial for over 70 interested people who want to become part of the fastest growing sport for active adults in America—Pickleball! The team of Joni O’Brien, Bob Kramer, Jean Labovitch, Lois Violanti, Drew and Linda Tucker, Debbie Westwater, Linda Deuel, Harry Rosenbleet, Len Gajeske and Leigh Beaty were available to answer questions about skills and equipment needed to begin playing this very popular sport. When signing up for the two hour introductory lesson, with one instructor for every two Pickleball students, beginners will learn the basics of the game, how to serve, hit, dink and volley and some simple strategies like stay out of the kitchen (the no volley zone). After becoming a member of SPA, beginning players have the opportunity to attend Assisted Play where they can further their skills and become proficient at calling the score and keeping track of who serves next. SPA members can participate in SPA sponsored activities such as Drop-In Play, Organized Play and the Members Only Tournament to be held in February. Members often form their own groups and play with friends and neighbors. Pickleball is a great way to stay in shape, enjoy being outside and be as competitive as you want to be – all the while having fun!
