Michael E. Sedgwick is an author and writer of novels, short stories, essays and memoirs. Mike’s love for reading novels and his desire to write began at an early age. He initiated and edited the school’s journal of poetry and essays while earning his degree in physics and chemistry at London University. Mike Sedgwick is the SaddleBrooke Gift Shop Featured Artist for the Month of December.

Mike was born in Portsmouth, England where he lived with his family throughout WWII. Portsmouth was a premier naval dockyard for the British Navy. The city was repeatedly bombed by the German bomber force. Mike’s earliest memories as a young child is when he often watched searchlights and anti-aircraft shell explosions that lit up the night sky.

Upon graduating college, Mike began his 37-year career with 3M Company in Wales. There he met his future wife Eileen; they have now been married for 55 years and have two children. After many successful years as a 3M Company engineer and technical writer in Europe, Mike was transferred to Saint Paul, Minnesota. 3M later assigned him as his division’s International Technical Manager. Mike retired in 1998 and moved from Minnesota to SaddleBrooke.

Mike said he was “always interested in writing but needed to forget the skills of technical writing and learn a new skill in writing short stories.” “I also needed to learn American idioms, American spelling, grammar and punctuation.” Mike gained writing experience by attending a junior college writing course and several groups interested in writing fiction.

In 2009, Mike began to concentrate on writing and publishing his first novel, Bramdean, which gained first prize from Arizona Authors Association in 2010. This was followed a little later by a collection of short stories under the title Of Heaven & Earth. In 2013, Mike published his novel Light on a Distant Shore and a second collection of short stories titled Report from Mars. After an interlude of illness, Mike began writing again and published his most successful novel, Time & Again in May 2018; followed by a collection of short stories, poems, essays and memoirs under the title, At the End of the Day in June.

Mike sells his novels and books on Amazon and at the SaddleBrooke Gift Shop. He joined the Gift Shop’s membership last July. Mike says that he enjoys talking with Gift Shop customers and discussing his writings with them.
