SaddleBrooke Computer Club

Computer class registration is still open

Dennis M Korger

Registration officially opened on August 15 and some classes started on September 12. Seventeen classes have openings as the Progress deadline approaches; openings may still be available when this issue arrives at your home in mid-September. Our 17 classroom PCs now have the April 2018 (1803) Windows 10 feature update installed. We anticipate installing the September 2018 (1803) feature update during the winter holiday break. Our nine Mac mini computers feature macOS High Sierra.

Starting in September and continuing through the following March, we host a free monthly public presentation on a computer related topic for all SaddleBrooke residents at 1:00 p.m. on the third Monday of the month in the MountainView Ballroom. On September 17, Kathy Niyazimbetov will provide an overview of the new SaddleBrooke TWO website and answer questions. Kathy is the SaddleBrooke TWO Marketing Coordinator. On October 15, Ken Knapp will speak on Cyber Security. Ken has extensive experience as a security consultant in private, military and governmental settings.

While we make every effort to publish an accurate and complete class schedule before registration begins, we’ve had more surprises than usual this year. We expect several additions to the class schedule to be listed by the middle of the semester. These will appear first on our website calendar at saddlebrookecc.org; our active members will also receive a notice via email.

David Tiefenbach regretfully cancelled his summer and fall classes due to an accidental injury; he has accelerated his plans to move to a Life Plan Community and will no longer be teaching here. We thank him for his years of service and wish him a speedy recovery. Dennis Korger will resume his usual teaching schedule once his cataract surgery recovery is complete, probably in mid-October. The folks from Cellular Sales reaffirmed that they still intend to return this fall to present classes for iPhone and Android phone users, but are not quite ready to commit to a definite date.

The SaddleBrooke Computer Club began in 1993 with three pioneering residents discussing their mutual interest in personal computers. Five years later, the burgeoning group incorporated as a non-profit educational organization dedicated to teaching computer classes. We’re always looking for new additions to our volunteer instructors’ group. We currently have an acute need for people with personal or professional experience with Apple devices and any of the new smart devices that make up the flourishing “Internet of Things.” If you are willing to share your experience in a discussion group or in our classroom, we would love to hear from you!

Shopping for a new computer this fall? You may be in for a pleasant surprise! Prices for memory chips and graphics cards are dropping rapidly as the demand from the cryptocurrency mining craze is finally fading away. Prices had doubled between July and December last year and are now returning to mid-2017 levels again.
