General meeting and School Volunteer Fair – November 16

SaddleBrooke Community Outreach, in proud partnership with three local area schools, presents our first School Volunteer Fair. Our mission is to introduce the volunteer opportunities for residents to learn about the need for volunteers at nearby schools and how you can make a difference. This is your chance to hear straight from the educators about their individual needs.

The School Volunteer Fair is Monday, November 16 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the SaddleBrooke Two MountainView Clubhouse in the West Ballroom. The scheduled speakers are Mr. Dennis Blauser, Superintendent of Oracle School District No. 2, Mr. John Ryan, Superintendent at Mammoth-San Manuel, Mr. Gerard Ball, Principal of Coronado K-8 School in Catalina, Ms. Nanette Soule, Principal of Mountain Vista Elementary School in Oracle and Ms. Julie Dale-Scott, Principal of San Manuel High School.

Our speakers will describe the need for and the help that volunteers provide to the students and teachers. There are multiple opportunities to help including, but not limited to, classroom assistants, reading and math tutors, library aides, playground monitors, sports programs, clerical assistants and office administrative duties and school bus greeters and monitors.

Light refreshments will be served. Please come out and help to make a difference in a child’s life!

Adopt-a-Family 2015

Ken and Ellen Perkins

We have been watching the heartbreaking news stories about families in the Middle East who are suffering great hardship to find a safe place to raise their children. They are truly in need of help and their plight just seems to get worse with each passing day. But we can’t forget that there are many children in need right in our area. While for most of us the economy is much improved there are still many people in need and many of them are children. Once again we would like to spread some joy to these children during the holidays. During the past ten years that we have been organizing this program, the residents of SaddleBrooke have been most generous in helping us to make wishes come true for disadvantaged children and we hope that will be the case again this year.

We work closely with the three elementary schools in Oracle, San Manuel and Mammoth to ensure that the families are residents of the town and are needy. The suggested donation is $60 to $70 per child with roughly half of that spent for a special gift or toy and the other half spent on durable play clothes. (The children are very needy.) If you wish to adopt a family to shop for, we can assign you a family and provide a wish list for them that will fit your budget. In an effort to make the donations go further, this year we will exclude adult children and grandparents (unless they are the legal guardians). “It is all about the kids.”

Last year the SBCO Adopt a Family project provided gifts for 90 families in the Tri-Community area. If your unit wasn’t involved last year, but would like to participate this year, please call for additional information. It’s fun and very rewarding! There is no overhead charge for this project so 100% of gifts and cash donations go to needy families.

We plan to deliver gifts to the Oracle, Mammoth and San Manuel elementary schools during the week of December 14. Gifts for tri-community families should be wrapped, packaged and delivered to the SBCO Office in the SaddleBrooke business center by December 14. We prefer to use clear plastic bags but they are hard to find locally. We have a supply on hand so we can give you as many as you need.

We would like to invite any and all of you to join us in this worthy cause. We need donations and we also need help with shopping, wrapping and delivery. Please make checks payable to SBCO with Adopt a Family in the notes section. You can drop off donations at the SBCO Office at Suite L in the SaddleBrooke business center or you can mail them to SaddleBrooke Community Outreach Treasurer, 63675 East SaddleBrooke Boulevard, Suite L, Tucson, Arizona 85739.

If you have any questions you can reach us by email at [email protected] or by phone, 825-6570.

We borrowed the Impact truck in order to make the deliveries to San Carlos in one trip. From left: the truckers are Joe Murdock, Ellen Perkins, Sam Carmen and David Wisniewski.

Adopt a Child 2015

We have been watching the heartbreaking news stories about families in the Middle East who are suffering great hardship to find a safe place to raise their children. They are truly in need of help and their plight just seems to get worse with each passing day. But please don’t forget that there are many children in need right in our area. Unfortunately, with unemployment near 80% on the San Carlos Reservation, Apache Indian children have been severely impacted. Once again we would like to spread some joy to these children during the holidays. Most of the children are of elementary and middle school age and will be identified by Tribal Social Services (TSS) agents, school teachers and school counselors.

The suggested donation is $60 to $70 per child with roughly half of that spent for a special gift or toy and the other half spent on durable play clothes. (The children are all very needy.) If you want to shop for the child yourself, we will provide you with a list of clothing sizes and the child’s wishes. We generally have the information for most of the Indian children by mid-November. We should be able to get the children’s names and wish lists to you by November 20 so you can go shopping before the black Friday rush.

We plan to deliver to the San Carlos Indian reservation on December 17. In order to avoid overwhelming the SBCO office and their all-volunteer staff, we will collect the gifts for the Apache Indian children at our house, 39698 S. Winding Trail, SaddleBrooke. Gifts for Apache Indian children should be wrapped and packaged with the child’s full name, the agency (Rice or TSS) and the TSS counselor or Rice Elementary School teacher and grade affixed tightly to the bag or box. We prefer to use clear plastic bags but they are hard to find locally. We have a supply on hand so we can give you as many as you need.

Last year the SBCO Adopt a Child project provided gifts for 190 Apache children on the San Carlos Reservation. If your unit wasn’t involved last year, but would like to participate this year, please call for additional information. It’s fun and very rewarding! There is no overhead charge for this project so 100% of gifts and cash donations go to needy families and children.
