Pima Cup matches resume for the MPMGA

Bob Edelblut

Every golfer for miles around knows just how unfriendly the weather has been in our area this spring. Remember the wind? Monday, April 17 was different. Clear blue skies, temperatures in the low 80s and not a whisper of wind; a perfect day for a Pima Cup Match hosted by the Ventana Canyon Golf and Racquet Club. This match was to be the MPMGA’s last of the current season — its last chance to move up in the standings.

Play began at 1:00 p.m., but let me assure you the driving range and putting greens were overrun with participants for hours before the official start. The Men’s Club opponent this day was the team from the La Paloma Country Club, always a tough competitor. Our A team was Bob Eder and Scott West; our B team was Tom Fitzgerald and Bob Edelblut and our C team was Len Raab and Ron Pozzi. Our teams were ready for the challenge but as it turned out so were our opponents! Both our A and B teams lost and unfortunately allowed the La Paloma team to build a healthy lead 22.5 to 13.5. It looked as if our third place position was in jeopardy but, have no fear, because our C team ran away with their match winning by the score of 12.5 to 5.5. The points earned by Len and Ron not only allowed our club to maintain its third place position overall but it also was the best score recorded by a C team in the day’s competition — they were big winners!

Thanks again to all our members who participated in this season’s Pima Cup competition. See you the next time around. A special thanks we send also to Ron Victor for taking on the task of manager.
