Hats for Kids’ Closet

Hats for Kids’ Closet

The first Wednesday of each month is Show and Tell. Members show projects they have been working on and the rest of the group oohs and ahhhs over the beautiful items. This is a chance for everyone to get ideas for our next project and with luck maybe even using up some stash yarn.

We also have many people who knit items for charity. This not only makes you feel good about helping others, but it can be a great way to try out something new on a small scale. Make a child-size hat before making an adult hat. Make a baby sweater more quickly than an adult one. Each year the Knit Wits decide which charities they will support most.

This year our top four charities are as follows:

Kids’ Closet: Hats for preschool through eighth grade

Family First Pregnancy Care Center (Oracle, Arizona): Booties, sweaters, blankets, hats

Tucson Troop Support: Annual baby shower for new military moms who are in the VA system

Knitted Knockers: Breast prosthesis for breast cancer survivors

We also have other charities, but the four listed are ones for which we buy yarn using our dues money. We also do chemo hats, ponchos for kids at Indian reservations and VA lap robes, to name a few.

Our Knit Wits are a wonderful group of ladies (still waiting for our first male member; are you out there?) who welcome new knitters/crocheters all through the year. The “desert rats” continue knitting through the summer, so come meet us. You’ll find us at HOA 1 Arts and Crafts Center, Room 4, every Wednesday morning from 9:00  to 11:30 a.m.
