The Knit Wits do many things through the year. We are often knitting/crocheting lovely items for ourselves or our loved ones. We also do various projects for donation, such as children’s hats for Kids’ Closet, chemo hats for local cancer centers and baby blankets and hats for veterans, to name a few.

With Breast Cancer Awareness Month upon us, it is significant to let everyone know how the Knit Wits help. Many members are busy knitting up Knitted Knockers. This program was started by a yarn shop in Tempe that distributes over 3500 free knockers annually around the world. The Knit Wits supply knockers directly to the American Cancer Society in Tucson for distribution in southern Arizona. Members also donate knockers to the program in Tempe.

What are Knitted Knockers? They are a breast prosthesis that can be used after a mastectomy. They are made in the shape of a breast with soft pima cotton yarn that is lightweight, breathes, is washable and wicks moisture away from the body. To date, Knit Wits have knitted up over 400 knockers. In addition, SaddleBrooke Scrapbook Club has made cards of encouragement for breast cancer survivors to mail out with the knockers.

You don’t have to be a member of Knit Wits to help. We have patterns, yarn, sizing guidelines and stuffing. If you have questions please contact Bette Stephens at 206-819-8827. Feel free also to stop in to a Knit Wits meeting held every Wednesday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the HOA 1 Arts and Crafts Center, Room No. 4.
