Jewish Friendship Group news

Marilyn Anthony

The High Holidays are over; the Break Fast provided delicious and copious food for the hungry attendees after the Yom Kippur fast. The babka was outstanding and everyone left feeling both happy and full!

Sharon and Larry Finegold held an Open Sukkah for all JFG and Institute members with the traditional Lulav and Etrog blessings, Kiddush and of course a nosh. Our thanks to the Feingold’s for welcoming so many of us into their Sukkah and allowing us to celebrate with them.

Our popular potluck supper is returning on Wednesday, November 30 at 6:00 p.m. at the HOA 1 Activity Centre. Your entrance fee is a delicious dish for all of us to enjoy. Please include the ingredients on a card so that people with allergies can eat safely. RSVP to Faith Fromson: [email protected] or 818-1154 to confirm your dish. This will be a themed Color Me Happy potluck so let’s hope the food is colorful!

Mark your calendars for the always-popular JFG Chanukah Party which takes place on December 28; details to follow.

Thanks to Eileen Feldgus and Willie Reich who kindly co-hosted the October Ladies’ Coffee. The weather co-operated and we were able to sit outside enjoying the mountain views.

The November coffee is cancelled due to mitigating circumstances. Abby Greene and Margie Baron hope to host at a later date. The JFG is considering holding a No-Host coffee at The Bistro during November/December with each person responsible for their order. We would meet in the bar area or possibly the private room if available.

The Co-Ed Book Club meeting in November is at Rhoda Kaplan’s home on Thursday, November 10 at 11:45 a.m. for optional lunch, discussion at 12:15 p.m. We’ll be talking about The Mapmaker’s Daughter by Alice Hoffman. The October meeting did not happen. After the Fire by Laura Belfer will be discussed at a later time this year.

On December 8 the club meets at Sandy Epstein’s house reading The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman—Come at 11:45 a.m.—discussion at 12:15 p.m. Beverage and snack provided. Respond by December 5.

On February 9 we will be reading Pumpkinflowers: A Soldier’s Story by Matti Friedman; we are still in need of a host and facilitator. Please let Sandy Epstein know if you would be interested in volunteering for that meeting. Other than leading the discussion, presenters need only provide dessert and drinks. It’s fun and easy. Plus you get to talk more! If you have never hosted do try it.

The Board of the JFG is currently planning future activities. If you have any suggestions for events, please do contact any Board member. Conversely, should you be unhappy with any events we put on, please let us know. We count on your support and encourage you to join our regular activities which are solely intended to encourage Jewish friendships throughout SaddleBrooke.

For further information about the JFG, please contact Co-Presidents Steve Grabell ([email protected], 520-825-4159) or Sy Efron at [email protected], 520-825-7047.
