Institute for Judaic Services and Studies announces classes

Sam Horowitz

The Institute for Judaic Services and Studies enjoyed meaningful and joyous services during the Jewish High Holy Days that ushered in the Jewish New Year.

The services were led by Rabbi Sanford Seltzer and Cantorial Soloist Sarah Bollt, accompanied by Carolyn Cochran.

Shabbat services for fall 2014 will be held on the Friday evenings of November 21 (Mariposa Room, DesertView Performing Arts Center) and December 19, 2014, (Mariposa Room, DesertView Performing Arts Center). Services begin at 7:00 p.m. led by Rabbi Seltzer and Sarah Bollt, accompanied by Carolyn Cochran.

An optional dinner at 5:00 p.m. in the MountainView Bistro precedes the lively Shabbat services and an Oneg Shabbat follows Services. The October 31 Oneg Shabbat was sponsored by Sharon and Art Triester in honor of their grandson Sam becoming a bar mitzvah. The November Oneg is being sponsored by Richard Gould in honor of the birth of his first great-grandchild, Olivia Carolen Pagliara. Sponsoring an Oneg Shabbat is a meaningful way in which to mark a milestone event in the family.

During the past several years, the entire community has looked forward to Rabbi Seltzer’s classes during the winter months.

The first class is scheduled for Monday, January 19, 2015: What Happens After I Die? Jewish Perspectives on Heaven, Hell and Immortality.

The following two classes will discuss The Origins of What We Know as Interreligious Dialogue and the Judeo-Christian Tradition: Two Surprising Events in Jewish History Without Which Neither Would have Been Possible.

Monday, February 2, 2015, Session I: When Jews Were Christians and Christians Were Jews and Some Were a Little Bit of Both: Its Enduring Legacy

Monday, February 9, 2015, Session II: When Jews Were Ghettoized and the Talmud, the Prayer Book and Other Jewish Texts Censored; Unforeseen Benefits.

All classes will be held in the Mariposa Room of the DesertView Performing Arts Center at 7:00 p.m. and all members of the community are cordially invited to attend.
