Health Night Out presents: Dr. David J. Martin, Orthopedic Surgeon, widely considered the premiere specialist in the total joint replacement of knees and hips in southern Arizona on Monday, May 26 at 7:00 p.m. at the MountainView Ballroom.

Dr. David Martin, MD, is an orthopedic surgery specialist in Tucson, AZ (five-star, according to Web MD), and has been practicing for 42 years. He graduated from Northwestern University, The Feinberg School of Medicine in 1976 and specializes in orthopedic surgery.

This fine fellow from Idaho, was born in Idaho Falls, who did his undergrad at the College of Idaho, decided to become the very best Orthopedic Surgeon that he could, so he went to Northwestern University in Illinois and started his climb to knowledge and fame. Recognizing the expertise available to him at Northwestern, he stayed for his internship and residency.

Some little magnet pulled him to Arizona where he continues to bless us with his magic and insistence on specifics, in order to perform surgeries for hundreds of fortunate people in the Tucson area. He moved from Chicago to Tucson in 1981 and has been a solo practitioner since 1988.

During the past 40+ years, he has traveled the globe, to perfect the joint replacement techniques as well as to acquire access to the very best appliances available for his patients. Dr. Martin is one of the first doctors in the country to utilize robotic/computer-assisted surgical techniques for the placement of joints. Dr. Martin is Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery.

Why do you want a knee replacement?

Why do people seek out an orthopedic physician in the first place? It could be an accident that has caused a break, but in our population, it is commonly our old buddy, “Arthur-ritis,” who has been tapping and now pounding at our knee or our hip. Perhaps, “Art,” has started to cause us to limp or walk a bit crooked. But for sure, we have realized that arthritis is painful. Dr. Martin will tell us that it is a degenerative, painful joint disease that often leads patients to undergo total joint replacement, and it doesn’t heal itself by doing nothing. Arthritis is caused by the deterioration of cartilage in the joint. Cartilage serves as insulation between the bones of the joint. When the cartilage of the joint wears away, the resulting pain and inflammation can be debilitating. Your chances of osteoarthritis increase with age; the illness most often affects middle-aged and older individuals. Your joints work hard during daily routine, and arthritis of the knee or hip can make it painful to perform normal tasks. If your arthritis is severe, you may begin to experience pain even when you are sitting down or trying to sleep.

In addition to his work, David Martin is the father of two amazing adult children, son, Dan, is an aerospace engineer at Sargent Aerospace in Tucson, and daughter, Keeley, has a Master’s in Nursing and works in San Diego. His magnificent wife, Patty, of 35 years sidestepped their anniversary, so they could be here with us on this Memorial Day. Dr. Martin also finds time to enjoy painting, archery and playing the guitar.

I first met Dr. David Martin, 20 years ago, when he performed one of his last double knee replacements on a SaddleBrooke resident, who convinced the good doctor, that he was strong enough to handle this. In preparation for this surgery, this resident had done hours of physical therapy that strengthened the muscles that support the joints that Dr. Martin replaced. After surgery, that patient did PT three times a week and therapeutic massage two times a week. At the end of six weeks, we watched Carolyn and Phil Baldino, dance the whole night away, on the SaddleBrooke Dance floor. I knew then, that Dr. Martin would be my choice, when I needed him. Why will I get a knee replacement? To dance. That is why.

Remember, it will be cool inside, and the ice water is free.
