The second lecture in the series presented by the SaddleBrooke Fine Arts Guild, in partnership with the University of Arizona Museum of Art, will take place on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Mesquite Grill at HOA 2. The presenter will be docent Gerry Bates who will discuss Degenerate Art. In the early 1930s the Nazis, led by Adolph Hitler, began a campaign of “cultural purification” by purging Germany of all forms of modern art, be it painting, sculpture, literature, music or film, that were deemed to be un-German, Jewish or Communist. They described these works as “degenerate art.” Those identified as “degenerate” artists were subjected to a variety of sanctions including losing their jobs, being forbidden to exhibit or to sell their work and in some cases being forbidden to produce art. This presentation deals with some of these degenerate artists who were, in fact, modern masters whose artworks are now held in high esteem. Gerry Bates retired as an assistant chief from the Tucson Fire Department after 34 years of service. He earned his master’s in Educational Leadership and his PhD. in Public Administration. He continues to teach at Pima Community College and Arizona State University. A real history buff, his mastery of this subject makes him an intriguing speaker.

Looking ahead, on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., docent Brack Brown will present The Art of the Great Depression.

Please mark your calendars and plan to come early for coffee. Remember, all lectures are free and are in the Mesquite Grill. We look forward to seeing you.
