Fine Arts Guild and UAMA Art Lecture Series

Tammy Bearden

The SaddleBrooke Fine Arts Guild, in partnership with the University of Arizona Museum of Art, will present a new series of three lectures beginning Wednesday, January 3, 2018, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the west ballroom of the MountainView Clubhouse. The first presenter will be docent Tammy Bearden who will discuss American Multi-Cultural Art. This presentation features works created by a very diverse group of artists—Mexican-American, African-American, Native-American and Asian-American. All artists receive inspiration from the world around them and from their experiences, but these multi-cultured groups were especially influenced by their communities. These artists have one thread in common—they all want to share something of their unique culture with us. Some are angry, some use a little humor, but all reflect pride in their culture and they want us to know and appreciate a bit more about their lives.

My first art museum was the Cleveland Museum of Art, which I enjoyed as a child and continued to love as a college student. After moving to Phoenix, I taught K-8 music for 23 years and then entered docent training at the Phoenix Art Museum. After seven years of docent experience at PAM, Bill and I moved to SaddleBrooke and I resumed docent work at the University of Arizona Museum of Art. I’ve been at UAMA for 10 years.

Looking ahead, the second lecture in the series will be presented by docent Gerry Bates on Wednesday, February 7, 2018, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. His subject will be Selfies: Self-Portraits Through the Ages. The third lecture will be presented by docents Fleurette and Marc Wallach on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Their topic will be High Anxiety—What Is It About Abstract Art?

Please mark your calendars and plan to come early for coffee. As always, the lectures are free and are in Ballroom West of the MountainView Clubhouse. We look forward to seeing you.
