Summer is coming to an end. Maybe not here, but up north where our snowbird friends still remain. We are eagerly awaiting our English Country Dancers among them to return. In the meantime, the few of us here keep meeting every Thursday for a lilting walk to the directions of our teacher, Enid Fowler.

Enid has the patience of an angel while keeping us going in the proper direction. Sometimes we do a dance in Waltz time while walking to the music. Mostly we line up in two opposing lines, one with men and the other with ladies. Often a lady may fill in for a missing man. Most dances are progressive whereby, with an odd number of couples, the extra couple gets to rest for one sequence until reentering the dance. With two and three couple dances there is often a good mixing of all the couples during the dance. Often we may dance in a circle or even an eight person square which provides variation from the contra type lineups. Beginners have a relatively easy time picking up most dances which are almost always preceded by a walk through under Enid’s direction before dancing to the music.

We welcome beginners at any time and it can be fun to bring visitors to either watch or participate. Bob and I often bring family and friends, including grandkids, who often join in the easier dances. There is no fee to participate and we dance every Thursday from 3:30 to about 5:00 p.m. mostly in the spacious Vermilion Room at HOA 1 Clubhouse.
