On Sunday, January 31 Dan Schroeder became the sixth M-PMGA active member to record a hole-in-one in January. No one questioned could remember that many aces occurring in that short a time frame—unbelievable. Dan’s hole-in-one was special for several reasons. It was his first ever in a career that began some fifty years ago somewhere in Chicago. It happened on the last Sunday of the month and he was playing in his Unit’s monthly golf tournament. That is Unit 49, by the way. One of his playing partners was Jerry Adamec, a fraternity brother and dear friend for most of those fifty years. Dan’s other playing partners were John Stevenson and Bob Edelblut and the quality of golf being played by this foursome with one exception was less than stellar. To make things even worse the wind picked up late in the front nine and just became a true nightmare by the time the round was finished. As Dan stood on the seventeenth tee at The MountainView Golf Course he tried as best he could to determine the impact the gusting wind was going to have on his shot. His guess was that it had to be at least a two club wind. The pin placement was on the front of the green and the distance was about 165 yards. Dan chose his five wood for the shot and as he addressed the ball he asked his partners to watch the ball because the sun was shining directly in his eyes. All three said that he hit it well and it was heading straight to the flag but no one saw it land. Dan proceeded to the rear of the green and looked quickly for his yellow ball. All he saw was white and slowly he marched to the backside of the green. Still there was no yellow ball in sight. John said, “Let’s go look in the cup” and everyone began walking to the pin. The grin on Dan’s face was priceless when he saw it resting at the bottom of the hole. His first words were, “I have got to take a picture.” Amazing—congratulations one more time. Yes, there was an immediate celebration at Dan’s home and then several hours later after all the tournament participants had arrived at El Charro’s for dinner Dan announced that their first drink was his treat. Quite a celebration, Dan. Thanks again.
